TVA to store coal combustion residuals in place
Knoxville, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Tennessee Valley Authority announced Friday that it will move forward with plans to permanently store coal combustion residuals, including coal ash, on 10 TVA properties.
The announcement comes after the potential environmental impacts of “closure in place” versus “closure by removal” were studied during a year long review.
In their statement, TVA says that the coal combustion residuals have a greater potential to be harmful if dug up and moved.
To close the coal combustion residual storage areas, TVA says moisture is removed from the residuals and a cap is added on top to keep rain out.
The capped areas will be monitored for at least 30 years.
