Two arrested in Scottsboro on drug related charges after authorities respond to call for service

SCOTTSBORO, Al. (WDEF) —  Two people were arrested in Scottsboro after a call for service uncovered drugs and drug paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 4:37 a.m., officers with the Scottsboro Police Department (SPD) responded to a call for an unresponsive individual in the 1600 block of South Broad Street.

Upon arrival, officers found 40-year-old Matthew Johnston unresponsive.

SPD said officers rendered medical aid, and Johnston became responsive.

Officers also encountered 29-year-old Dakota O’Rear.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for the residence, and officers located the following:

  • 1.44 grams of Methamphetamine
  • 0.9 grams of Fentanyl
  • 4 grams of Marijuana
  • 2 sets of digital scales
  • 2 used syringes
  • 1 glass pipe with residue
  • 1 cut straw
  • 1 pack of rolling papers

Both Johnston and O’Rear were arrested and taken into custody.

Johnston is being charged with the following:

  • Possession of Controlled Substance (Fentanyl)
  • Possession of Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Possession of Marijuana 2nd
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

O’Rear is being charged with the following:

  • Possession of Controlled Substance (Fentanyl)
  • Possession of Marijuana 2nd
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Both were booked into the Jackson County Jail.
