Tyner Academy hosts World Quantum Day

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Tyner students showcased their Friendship Detector projects as a part of World Quantum Day on Tuesday.

Tyner Academy is one of the first schools to participate in world quantum day activity, which was established and set up by EPB as well as PEF,” said Dr. Tiffany Earvin, Principal at Tyner Academy.  “So, with more quantum, they will look at all things science and whether the atoms move.”

For six weeks, students will learn about the connection between artificial intelligence, machine learning and quantum technology.

Principal Earvin believes learning about science is key to her students’ future success.

“Science is a major component of what we do here at Tyner Academy and multiple facets, whether it is the Health Science Institute or through our EPB Institute. And we want our students to really be engaged in what they can become by looking at how we utilize science in the everyday world,” said Earvin.

Students learned how to train a Google Teachable Machine in order to recognize the number of people on their computer.

By coding a microbit, students were able to control the color of LED, based on the number of people detected.

Ninth grader Halcyunna Upshaw found the project both stressful and educational.

“The impact this has is that you could be able to use this in the future, for your future careers. And you are able to say that you work with AI and that you know how to work with AI,” said Upshaw.

Upshaw also hopes this quantum project will not only help her in the future, but also other students.

“I hope that this could help me, help kids in the future and be able to learn and work with AI, as well as kids can create their own AI for what they want. I also hope that this could have a great impact on my future. And it could give me a career in this also,” Upshaw concluded.
