Tyner’s Josiah Bridgeman Showcases His Talent in Football and the Flute
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Tyner linebacker and wide receiver Josiah Bridgeman has a secret talent.
He can play the flute.
When Bridgeman isn’t running with the Ram Train, he’s running with the Chattanooga Junior Symphony Orchestra as the first chair flutist.
News 12’s Angela Moryan has the story.
Said Bridgeman: “It’s just the way to express music and stuff because I feel like music is a part of my life more than ever now, so I just feel like it’s a great way to express myself.”
Junior Josiah Bridgeman is Tyner’s football playing flutist. The Ram Train didn’t know about his hidden talent until this year, when he had to miss a week of summer practice for music camp.
Said head coach Scott Chandler: “I said, ‘Well, what do you play?’ He said, ‘The flute.’ I said, ‘THE FLUTE?!’ He said, ‘Yeah.’ So I let that one go. I didn’t say anything. So a couple days pass. I come back to him, and I go, ‘So what chair are you?’ He said, ‘I’m first chair in the Chattanooga Junior Symphony Orchestra.’ I said, ‘You got to be kidding me!’ I said, ‘What made you play the flute?’ He said, ‘I got dared in middle school to play the flute, and I figured if I was going to do it I was going to it the best I could.'”
Said Bridgeman: “It was back in sixth grade. My best friend, we were doing instruments and stuff, and my band director said my top three were trumpet, flute and clarinet, and he dared me to play flute, and he said, ‘We can see who gets better at it.’ And I ended up getting better at it, so I just stuck with it.”
Said Chandler: “I mean, that tells you what kind of guy he is. He’s a motivated guy, and if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it the best you can. So he takes that over on the football field too.”
Said quarterback Josh Jackson: “He’s a hard worker. He tries to outwork you. Little drills, he takes advantage of it. So I think that’s good for him. I knew he was that type of person.”
Said receiver Zashun Hubbard: “He should play us a little eight bars of something.”
Chandler: “When he told me, I mean, I couldn’t even make fun of him no more. I mean, guy is first chair in the junior symphony, all I can say is great!”
