Tyrone Murphy murder trial set to begin this week, Jury selection began Monday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The trial of 57 year old Tyrone Murphy is set to start this week in Hamilton County.

Murphy is charged in the stabbing death of 30 year old Ashley Cates at her apartment on Bailey avenue.

It happened last June.

Police say the woman was stabbed multiple times.

We spoke with her father, Bill Cates in an exclusive interview.

He says that Murphy was “offered a 20 year plea on 2nd degree murder.”

He says the family “said no” that wasn’t enough “because he will be out in 10 years…for stabbing her 26 times that’s not an accident.”

Cates believes the “jury will do the right thing.”

Chattanooga Police said they found a trail of blood leading to the nearby apartment of Murphy.

He’s charged with criminal homicide and tampering with evidence.
