UAW issues counter offer to Volkswagen
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The United Auto Workers says they have issued a counter offer to Volkswagen amid contract negotiations.
Chuck Browning on behalf of the union’s bargaining team said they had multiple issues with VW’s final offer.
Volkswagen in that offer stated employees would get a 20 percent raise among other benefits.
The UAW contends however that the offer doesn’t adequately address cost of living adjustments and healthcare access among other concerns.
Specifically, they say they want language in the contract that protects workers from future layoffs.
Browning said, “The truth is, the company’s recent proposal does not guarantee your employment, union status, or your negotiated contract in the event of sale of operations in Chattanooga… Don’t take my word, ask the company. Any answer that isn’t yes or no is disingenuous on the company’s part.”
VW sent the following statement to News 12 in response:
“Volkswagen made it clear to the union that our last, best, and final offer is indeed final. We cannot in good faith prolong negotiations by continuing to bargain when we have already put our best offer on the table. It is time for the UAW to give VW employees a voice and let them decide for themselves by voting on our final offer.”
The UAW was seen holding picket practice last week, but say a strike has not been authorized at this time.
