UNCG Downs UTC Women 63-61 in Overtime

(gomocs.com) Chattanooga women’s basketball suffered a 63-61 setback at UNC Greensboro on Thursday afternoon. The Mocs fall to 6-20 and 4-7 in the league. The Spartans move to 7-17 and 3-8 in SoCon action.

UTC held a one-point advantage at the half, but the Spartans outscored the Mocs by 13 in the third quarter to hold a sizable lead.

From 5:51 to 0:58 left in the game, the Mocs went on a 15-1 run to cut their deficit to 50-48. After a timeout, the hosts hit a jumper to take a four-point lead.  Karsen Murphy knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Mocs in it, making it a one point game with just under 40 seconds to go. With 2.6 seconds left in regulation, the Mocs were down three and Murphy hit a three from the wing to send the game into over locked at 54.

In overtime, the game was tied at 61 with 1:10 left in overtime. With one second left on the clock, Boyd gave the Spartans the game with a layup.

Aja Boyd posted a game-high 21 points capped off by her game-winning basket. Brooke Hampel paced the Mocs with 18 points. Murphy (12), Sigrun Olafsdottir (11) and Abbie Grace Porter (11) joined her in double figures.

The Mocs are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 as they head to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina at 5 p.m. for their final road contest.
