UPDATE: 5 Injured In Shooting
Tonight, we learn more about the shooting on 13th Street.
It happened just after midnight Sunday morning.
Reanita Carter, the resident there, says she was hosting a birthday party for her godson.
She says she had just left the house when gunfire erupted.
"I get a phone call saying your house been shot up," Carter says.
"I don’t know how to take it, it’s a lot to take in," she says.
Carter says they were just having a party and she doesn’t understand why it happened.
Five victims were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The mother of seven says her children are afraid to come home.
"They dont even want to stay here. They’ve been at my friends house," says Carter.
City councilman Moses Freeman says violent altercations taint the city’s image.
"It is a blemish, it is a shooting," says Freeman.
However, in this case, he says the people involved are not your typical offenders.
"The people who we do know were are not the people that we’re after," says Freeman.
The councilman says this will not affect their progress with the violence reduction initiative program.
The program pertains more to adult gangs and more violent offenses.
"The violence reduction initiative program pertains to the actual killing of people who are related to drugs and gangs versus gangs and that sort of thing. This seemed to have been more juvenile," says Freeman.
"Everybody wants to know who did it," says Carter.
With roughly a hundred people in attendance, Carter says she thought for sure someone was dead"
"I just knew somebody was dead. The whole way home I was just praying please no one be dead," says Carter.
"Things will get better and continue to get better, but we need everyone to participate in it," says Freeman.
Chattanooga police say they’ve only had one other call to this residence all year.
Authorities ask anyone with information to call the Chattanooga Police Department.
