Update on Hawthorne Street shooting

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – Neighbors living along the 1000 block of Hawthorne Street are providing much needed details into a shooting that left two people wounded.

It happened Tuesday night.

According to several neighbors, multiple shots were fired around 8PM. Two and half hours later multiple shooters reportedly returned to the scene and sprayed the area with bullets.

"It was like 100 rounds fired and it was beside my house. We didn’t see anything. We heard the gun shots and we all hit the floor. So when the gun shots were over with, we looked out the door and saw someone laying on the street screaming for their life," said one female neighbor who asked not to be identified.

According to several witnesses, multiple shooters were running between two houses and shooting in the direction of a parked car on the street.

The shooting resulted in two people being hit.

Malik Blackstone, 18, of Chattanooga and a 16-year old girl suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

"They were coming through the cut between the two houses; two groups of guys. We heard several different shots; one from an assault rifle and a couple of hand guns," said another neighbor who agreed to talk to WDEF as long as his identity was not revealed.

Almost every object in the way took a bullet; including several cars and several homes. One of those homes is owned by Timothy Newsome. His wife was sitting in a chair when a stray bullets hit their house..

"She was about 12-inches away from where the bullet hit the wall," Newsome said.

The former Military veteran is also just as lucky to be alive.

"I saw a guy with an AK-47 running across the sidewalks so I just stood there," Newsome said.

Unfortunately for Newsome, this wasn’t the first time his home was hit by a stray bullet.

"This is the third time since we been here in the last 18-months," Newsome said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, police were called to another shooting near Hawthorne Street.  It was located close to South Holtzclaw Street and Highland Park Avenue.

According to police dispatch, the victim arrived at Erlanger Hospital with an unknown injury.

It’s unclear if the shooting from Tuesday night and the shooting from late Wednesday afternoon are related.
