UPDATE: Skyy Mims murder trial begins

Dalton, GA (WDEF) – A jury was seated Monday in the murder trial of Skyy Mims, and they heard opening statements from the attorneys.

The aspiring model, dancer and rapper from Detroit is charged with killing store clerk 37-year-old Dahyabhai Chaudhari in March 2014.

The prosecution says Mims stabbed the store clerk with a knife that was more than 3 inches long.

Officials say Chaudhari’s aorta was cut, and he bled to death.

The prosecution says Mims put duct tape on the victim’s face.

They say she stole lottery tickets.

Mims was arrested 48 hours later.

The prosecution showed surveillance photos of a woman who looks like Mims killing the clerk.

During Mims’ arrest, authorities recovered lottery tickets with serial numbers that trace back to the store.

They also recovered the knife and gloves used in the murder that had both the victim’s DNA and Mims’ DNA on them.

Also, deputies found a cell phone at the crime scene that is registered to Mims.

The defense also gave it’s opening statement saying a woman named Keisha Jones looks almost identical to Mims.

The defense says both women came down from Detroit and were from the same neighborhood.

The defense says we never see Skyy Mims’ face in any of the surveillance pictures.
