UTC Looking to Turn Moss Creek Into Mocs Creek in Women’s SoCon Tourney

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The UTC Mocs women’s golf team is gearing up for this year’s SoCon tournament at Moss Creek Lane.

News 12’s Brian Armstrong finds out how the team is getting ready for a chance at another SoCon title at a course they have historically dominated.

Said defending SoCon champ Dorota Zalewska: you never know who’s golf.

Moss Creek Lane is hosting this year’s Women’s SoCon Golf Tournament, and it has been nicknamed MOCs Creek Lane because of the six times the Women’s SoCon tournament has been there. The Mocs have won it five times and finished runner up The other.

Said head coach Colette Murray: the North Course, we won five in a row. The South Course, we’ve only been there one time and Monica graduated a few years ago. She won. Individually, I’ve got good feelings about Moss Creek.

But this is a different golf course because the greens are brand new.

Said Murray: The greens at this particular golf course are brand new, so they’re extremely firm, not as receptive as the greens that might be a couple of years mature. The greens that we have here at our facility, we have one little patch that is brand new, so it responds similarly to what we’re probably going to see there.

Said Zalewska: You need to be very deliberate and good around the greens, which we can do here because we have very similar greens in our facility that allow us to kind of have that mental game ready.

This is something last year’s defending SoCon champion is happy about.\

Said Zalewska: I played that course my freshman year.I don’t have great memories, but I have basically been in every possible spot there. So I think I kind of have an idea of what the golf course is preparing for me.

Said Murray: It’s fair to say Dori is a completely different person than she was when she was a freshman.

So she’s been able to conquer a lot in the last few years. Going to that golf course where her memories might not be as fond. She can go with the approach that I’m Not the player that I was back then.

And freshman Kira Healey, winner of the SOCOM Player of the Month, has been coming on strong thanks to her teammates pushing her.

Said Healey: Dory our super senior. She pushes me every single day. I want to be like Dory, and all I want to do.One of my goals for the semester is to beat Dory. No matter what you’re doing, just beat Dory. And if I beat Dory, I know I’m doing well because Dory is such an amazing player.

Reporter: Have you gotten her?

Said Healey: I did. In our last tournament in Arizona. I did get her. I was very happy. Very quietly, though, I sat in my corner.I didn’t make a big deal out of it.I sat in my corner, but I was grinning on the inside.
