UTC Women Edge Samford 71-69 in Double OT For First SoCon Win
(gomocs.com) Chattanooga’s women’s basketball team defeated the Samford Bulldogs in Birmingham, Ala. 71-69 in double overtime for their first Southern Conference victory of the season. The Mocs improve to 3-14, 1-1 SoCon, while Samford drops to 5-10, 0-1 SoCon.
Amaria Pugh led the Mocs with 18 points. Brooke Hampel (15), Singrin Olafsdottir (10) and Abbey Cornelius (10) also scored in double figures. Cornelius completed a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Chattanooga forced overtime with a strong comeback in the fourth quarter. The Mocs trailed by seven entering the fourth and were down four with 37 seconds to go. A three by Dena Jarrells and a free throw by Cornelius tied the game at 60 at the end of regulation.
Samford forced double OT with a three pointer with 6.3 seconds to go in the extra period. In double overtime and the game tied at 69 with two seconds to go, Hampel gave the Mocs the win with a layup off the glass.
UTC is now 3-1 under Head Coach Katie Burrows in overtime games. The nine three pointers are the second most made by the squad this season.
UTC is back in action as they travel to Johnson City to face ETSU on Saturday, Jan. 15 at noon.
