UTC Women’s Basketball Team Continues to Battle Through Adversity
The biggest rival for the UTC women’s basketball team this year has been adversity.
Injuries have left the Mocs 6-9 overall, and 1-1 in the SoCon.
But Chattanooga keeps fighting and trying to persevere.
When Deandra Schirmer walked out for her first game at UTC, the injuries had already begun.
Schirmer:”So we had 14 players on our roster, but now healthy we only have ten healthy bodies. Healthy is a loose term. We might have some in and out.”
Olafsdottir:”We have dealt with a lot of adversity for sure. Lot of injuries. Lot of different parts moving. Learning a whole new offense and defense.”
If only there was a way to learn to stay healthy, but that’s sports.
Schirmer:”We got them shirts that say ‘Chattanooga vs Everyone’. We talked about we are all we’ve got, but we’re all we need.”
As if the injuries weren’t bad enough, Chattanooga suffered a gut-punching loss to Bellarmine in December. Where the Knights erased a five point deficit in the final 8 seconds to win 67-66.
Olafsdottir:”That was a gut-punch for sure. That’s something we can learn from, and it won’t happen again.”
Mocs have certainly been knocked down like a boxer, so why not show a Rocky movie for inspiration.
Schirmer:”So we showed the quote where Rocky is talking to his son. And there’s the quote about it’s not how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. That’s this season.”
Given all UTC has endured. They’re battle tested and ready to ride.
Schirmer:”Now we have kind of seen it all. We’ve gotten to the point when adversity hits, we don’t flinch. Like if the other team goes on a run, we’re going to be the steady one.”
