RESTON, Va. (WDEF) – Volkswagen of America announces the two trim lines they will be selling later this year of their new electric sedan.

The ID.7 is a near-luxury vehicle, aiming to compete with Tesla.

But you can also think of it as the new, electric Passat (the company discontinued the line of family cars that were made here in Chattanooga).

Volkswagen has not released a U.S. price or range yet for the ID.7.

But auto industry magazines are predicting it will be in the $60,000 range, which they say is cheaper, yet better equipped than a comparable Tesla.

Volkswagen is only offering the two top line versions here so far, the Pro S and Pro S Plus.

You can read the details of what’s offered in those trims, here.

The ID.7 should be available in the U.S this fall, which is when the company will announce prices.

It is already on sale in Europe.

The cars will be built in Germany, with the Chattanooga plant focusing on electric SUVs.
