Volkswagen Chattanooga temporarily halting ID.4 production after recall

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The national recall by Volkswagen on Tuesday is going to affect some jobs here in Chattanooga.

The company announced that they are furloughing around 200 workers beginning next week as they temporarily halt production of the id.4 here.

The vehicle was part of the recall announced about problem door handles.

The recall found that if an electric sensor gets too damp, it could automatically open a door while the vehicle is in motion.

That hasn’t actually happened so far.

So the company is going back to the drawing board to find a fix.

They say they will resume production here once they figure it out.

“While we address the issue, we are focused on doing right by our employees, dealers and consumers through this disruption. Approximately 200 employees in Chattanooga will be furloughed beginning Sept. 23 and we are supporting them by supplementing unemployment from the state of Tennessee so they will still receive 80 percent of their base compensation and will continue to be covered by all current benefits during this time. We are also exploring ways to support our dealers while we determine a remedy for our customers. This disruption in no way changes our commitment to the ID.4 and our growing BEV portfolio. The ID.4 remains one of America’s bestselling electric vehicles.”
