Vols Will Tangle With Tough Gators Defense
Tennessee opens SEC play against their old division nemesis in the Florida Gators.
The Vols have dropped ten straight to Florida.
And ending the streak in the Swamp will be a tough task for Tennessee.
So what will it take for Tennessee to finally beat Florida? Execute General Neyland’s Maxims.
Said head coach Butch Jones,"It all boils down to maxim one. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win."
Last year, the Vols failed to score a touchdown against the Gators, and Florida’s defense hasn’t exactly softened this year.
Said Jones-"They may be the best defense we have faced since we’ve been here, and they’re very, very deep. They play ten defensive linemen."
Gators coach Jim McElwain says Tennessee passes the eye test when it comes to talent.
"Defensively you can tell that they have recruited to the SEC level. Very athletic. Obviously the two running backs, you know (Jalen)Hurd and (Alvin)Kamara, they’re what you expect in this league. They’re going to play a long time beyond this league."
Hurd and Kamara will face a Gators bunch that leads the SEC in rushing defense.
Said Jones,"We’re playing a very explosive and deep defensive front. Like we spoke about a couple of weeks ago, sometimes a two-yard gain is a positive gain. Sometimes getting the dirty yards. Getting the dirty yards. Getting the ball back to the line of scrimmage. The thing you can’t have is negative yardage football plays when you run the football."
Despite UT’s lack of success against Florida, they believe they can get the job done.
Said Jones,"You look at where we’re at. We’re at 2-1 right now. We took a top five overall football program into double overtime. We took care of business against a very, very good Bowling Green football team, and we did what we needed to do to get the win last week."
Kickoff is at 3:30pm, and the game will be televised on WDEF News 12.
