Volunteers Needed for Flag Placement at Chattanooga National Cemetery Ahead of Memorial Day
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — As Memorial Day approaches, a powerful and solemn tradition returns to the Chattanooga National Cemetery—one that honors the lives of those who served.
The Chattanooga Area Veterans Council (CAVC) will once again lead the effort to place nearly 50,000 American flags on the graves of fallen service members. This year’s flag placement will take place on Saturday, May 24 at 8:00 a.m., and volunteers of all ages are invited to participate.
“Each Memorial Day weekend, flags are placed on every grave at Chattanooga National Cemetery,” said Captain McCamish of the CAVC. “It’s a monumental task—there are 49,800 grave sites—and we want to place a flag at each one. To do that, we need people to help. We’ll make it as convenient as possible.”
To streamline the process, flags will be pre-staged at the end of each row, making it easy for volunteers to get started. Parking will be available on-site at the cemetery.
This annual event is a deeply meaningful way for the community to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Whether you’ve volunteered in the past or are joining for the first time, your presence helps ensure that no hero is forgotten.
