Wasserstrom Twins Help Rack Up Wins For East Hamilton Softball
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) East Hamilton’s softball team is the picture of success this season — first in the district, ranked in the top 20 in the state. The Hurricanes have a set of sisters at the heart of the team. News 12’s Angela Moryan has their story.
Said head coach Norma Nelson: “It’s really cool because one’s pitching to the other one, so they’re just a dynamic duo.”
Twins Danielle and Nicole Wasserstrom were just what the Hurricanes were looking for when they moved here two years ago.
Said Nelson: “When they first moved here from Chicago, they’re like, ‘Well, what positions do you need?’ I said, ‘I need a pitcher and a catcher.’ ‘Well, that’s what we do!'”
Selling East Hamilton was easy.
Said Nicole Wasserstrom: “I really liked coach Nelson when we first met her.”
Said Danielle Wasserstrom: “She was just very like encouraging and positive. And they took us around the school, and it was very nice, and they were so friendly so it was kind of like, ‘Yeah, I want to be there.'”
Angie: “How pivotal was the addition?”
Said Nelson: “Oh, it was awesome. I’ve made a joke about it that Frank over at UTC needs to hire me to be a recruiter.”
Said teammate Reese Knox: “They’ve been a big aspect to this team, not only just their skill set but the way they act. They’re always positive, upbeat.”
Danielle, the pitcher, also plays shortstop and bats over 400.
Said Knox: “It’s really unique. You know, she didn’t really pitch for us last year. This year she just took in that role that needed to be taken.”
Said Nelson: “A lot of times a good pitcher’s not a really good hitter. But she’s just a really good all around player.”
Having her twin sister catch for her has only made her better.
Said Danielle: “It’s the most helpful in the game because I can’t see what I’m doing so when she can see it it’s like okay I can fix that now.”
Said Nicole: “It’s a little frustrating when it’s like I know she can do better when she’s missing her spots or whatever. It’s different because like you have to go in the car on the way home. So I could go in the car and be like, ‘Yeah, our pitcher was bad today,’ but you can’t with her in the car.”
Said Danielle: “She’s my biggest competition but also she’s always there for me when I need it. She’ll be the last one to give me a compliment which is good for me because then I know I really did something good.”
