Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Passes Milestone
TVA announces that Unit 2 at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant has cleared a major milestone.
An NRC advisory group recommends granting an operating license.
The committee reports “there is reasonable assurance that WBN 2 can operate as the second unit of the dual unit Watts Bar Nuclear Plant without undue risk to the health and safety of the public.”
The recommendation completes a regulatory stop for starting up the nation’s first new nuclear unit in 20 years.
It has been a six year project so far.
TVA Chief Nuclear Officer Joe Grimes says “This is a major milestone that will bring clean, reliable energy and economic benefits to TVA, the Tennessee Valley and the industry for decades.”
