We still remember Luther on what would have been his 101st birthday
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – It has been eight and a half years since Chattanooga’s leading broadcaster passed away at the age of 92.
But we still remember Luther here at WDEF-TV.
His career in radio is unprecedented. More than 70 years on the air at WDEF radio. He is the only broadcaster who was on the air to report both the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.
Luther Massingill is in both the Tennessee and the national radio Halls of Fame.
But Luther was a double-dipper.
Not only did he keep his morning radio show, but he also worked at our TV station from the day we signed on the air in 1954 until just before his death.
For our 50th anniversary in 2004, we put together this profile of his long career in both radio and Tennessee.
