What’s Right With Our Schools: Antioch at Howard

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Howard Schools is not resting on its Level 5 status. The faculty and administrators are always looking for new ideas to incorporate into their curriculum.

The lines of communication are now open between Howard and a school in the middle our state. That free flow of information is good example of what’s right with our schools.

Dr. Charles Mitchell is an administrator at Howard. He says, “We are glad and excited to have you here. We want you to see our instructional and management best practices, and also have you see our Future Ready Institute.”

Dr. Mitchell continues, “And they are learning about our instructional and management best practices, but also they call it Academies of Nashville. We call them future ready institutes.  So, it’s good for unity and diversity and just collaboration and just making our kids better, but in members of society.”

Kendra Broome is the College and Career Ready Director at Antioch High School.

She says, “Oh, I love it. I love the collaboration between the schools and the students. And we’re so excited to have them at Antioch High School. When it comes to visit Antioch.”

Dr. Mitchell chips in, “We know we deal with a lot of schools that look different from us, from a demographic. But we know as an administrative team here at Howard, we know it’s very important that we have an overall inclusive view and also try to have the leadership exchange with demographics that match with ours. Look like it mirrors it.”

Kendra Boome adds, ” We are over 60% Hispanic, so we are definitely diverse school population. I just think it’s really good to kind of see a diverse population between the schools and actually can see what we can learn from each other.”

Kamari Shelton is a junior at Antioch High School.

He says, “When we come here, we’ll see new experiences because we don’t have construction, and then we’ll also get to show them what we have at our school. So, it’s just like we’ll both get the opportunity to just see different environments of high school.”

Dr. Charles Mitchel concludes, “It’s about creating future leaders and whether in Nashville, Knoxville, it doesn’t really matter. They’re future leaders of our state and also this country. The biggest value is that when you learn not to live in isolation, right? When you learn to see things from a different perspective and a different viewpoint, you’re going to be very successful. So, it’s very impactful for our students to understand. It’s just not about what happens here at Howard, but it’s also what’s going on in greater Hamilton County, but also what’s going on in the greater state of Tennessee in our area.”
