What’s Right With Our Schools: Battle Academy Bagel Spread
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Students at Battle Academy recently tackled a tasty and fun assignment that taught them the ins and outs of running a business. With ingredients from their own garden, they created a bagel spread that made its way onto the shelves at Honey Seed.
Tarah Kemp is the Culinary Integration Specialist at Battle Academy
She says, ” Today we are here. We made it to the Chopped competition. We are here at Honey Seed, and we are going to have an amazing opportunity to have the different judges be able to taste all of these amazing bagel and cream cheese combinations and see who is the winner based on a set of criteria.”
Megan Steventon is the Marketing and Sales Manager at Honey Seed.
She explains, “Well, it didn’t start with me. I actually was reached out to by Tara Kemp and Caitlin Campbell, and Tara Kemp in her class worked on the cream cheese flavor, while Caitlin Campbell worked on starting a business with Robert, with the children, and the bagel aspect.”
Tarah chips in,” We have 20 different bagels and 20 different cream cheese combinations. So as a result, each one was specifically unique. The only criteria was, it had to be edible, and it had to use an ingredient from our rooftop garden. The kids are full of energy, and they’re excited. They’re full of pride, and they’re ready to see who’s going to be the winner at the end of the day.
4th grader Ben Davis is one of the winners.
He says, “It feels pretty good, and I’m upside that we win, and I feel like we all did a good job.”
Tarah concludes, “The winner winning bagel is now going to be sold here, and the proceeds will actually help support cooking up learning and the culinary lab, and all in all, we could not have done it without our community partners, our judges from the community. We’re excited to see what feedback we can do for next year as they move into fifth grade and we find those improvements and make it even bigger, even better.”
