CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Students at Hunter Middle are making great strides in robotics and mathematics, but they are also excelling in the arts and athletics. Feast your eyes on a few of their recent accomplishments in tonight’s What’s Right With Our Schools.
Heidi Moses is the Principal at Hunter Middle.
She says, “We strive to provide academic press and personalization for every single one of our students. So, we have a variety of opportunities for our students to be involved and we encourage that. Our staff has really gotten on board with providing these opportunities.
Melanie Collins teaches gifted children at Hunter Middle.
She says, “This group of boys just kind of jelled. They’re very supportive of one another and enjoy just doing math together.”
The students chipped in, ” It’s a good opportunity to be able to participate in it. We worked very hard.”
“We were kind of surprised at first yeah. We were really surprised because like it was really hard test. Yeah, that was really hard.”
” It’s pretty fun, especially when it’s harder questions because you really just have to think about the questions.”
Principal Moses explains, “We believe that any opportunity for our students to be on a team um and compete or just work on something together builds life skills. Kids need people skills. And so being able to interact with each other and problem solved together is one thing that we’re really working on with our students and our staff.”
7th grader Fatemeh Kassaee adds, “We basically um code a robot to complete missions. And every year there’s a theme. This year it was um Marine Aquatics.”
Sponsor Julieta Goode says, “They won the second place in core values. They originally had qualified for this competition because they had the um best robot design. And it it was… it was a great thing. It was, it was a great day for them.”
7th grander Hannah Inch adds, “Gracious Professionalism is so important to us. Is because we don’t let our, we don’t let our failures define us. We make it we make it a part of us. And they make us stronger.”
Other students agree, “I think like we put in a lot of work and a lot of practice.”
“We showed like other teams like last year we had a like it was a okay one that good season. We did way better this season.”
Principal Moses says, “Our arts program is phenomenal. Uh, Mr. Peggram does a great job. And he always finds opportunities to showcase our students.”
Art Teacher Kent Peggram says, “Recently, we um entered the Hunter Museum um student exhibition. And that’s schools all over Hamilton County homeschooling, and we had a student get an honorable mention. Um, that was exciting. That was uh Kylie Santana. I think the Arts add diversity to the skill set. I think that um, when the uh Visual Arts as well as the other related arts are Incorporated with academics that you produce a well more well-rounded student.”
Principal Moses concludes, “We believe that students who are engaged in school, um tend to perform better and they’re here every day. At Hunter Middle School we strive for Academic Press and personalization. And we have several opportunities for students to get involved and be engaged at Hunter Middle School. It’s a great day to be a Hunter Hawk.”
