What’s Right With Our Schools: Ivy League Graduates
CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) — Cleveland High School continues to excel both in and out of the classroom. This year, two graduating seniors are taking their achievements to the next level. Both are heading to an Ivy League university. Their success serves as an inspiration for other students to dream big and pursue academic excellence. Robert Hanley visited Cleveland High School for this week’s edition of ‘What’s Right With Our Schools’.
“Man we have so many wonderful programs going on our CTE programs are great. Our academic programs are great we are we’re showing growth with all sub-groups that’s out of this world and so we’re so excited about the things that we’re doing here at Cleveland high school, and it really just boils down to work hard, get smart, be nice. That’s our six words that that we try to live by and that’s kind of our motto at Cleveland high school and so that’s what we’re doing every day is we’re working hard we’re getting smart and we’re being nice to other people,” said Bob Pritchard, the principal at Cleveland High School.
“Things they are doing right here is definitely teaching the kids how to be responsible how to be an up-and-coming citizens in this world and be upstanding adults and definitely just how the world works basically,” said Cade Cox, a Cleveland High School student.
“Really excited about the diversity of Cleveland high school and we celebrate it often. We’re one of the most diverse schools in the state of Tennessee and we’re excited about that. We actually have two students who are going to Ivy League schools, which is which is unheard of for this area, I think in some cases and so we’re super pumped about those two guys that are going to Ivy League schools. One’s going to Harvard and one’s going to Yale. I think they have finally decided on and so that’s just a testament to the great things that our teachers are doing the great things that our students are doing,” said Pritchard.
“Dr. DeLoach, she teaches a compound come to class English classes and stuff like that. He’s really showed me how to mature and not just like my writing but in my everyday life as well and just talking and talking in front of people talking to people and stuff like that so he’s one of the big ones,” said Ephram Kyle, a student at Cleveland High School.
“When you experience a culture change or a vision a mission change, it’s almost like turning a cruise ship, it’s slow going at first, but eventually it catches speed and so when I walk in the classrooms, I see every student authentically engaged. I see every student active in their own learning participating and not opting out of their own instruction. I see teachers engaged, I see teachers excited, I see students excited to learn and so it’s just an exciting time here at Cleveland high school and that’s just one of the things here if we had time, I could list several more,” said Eric Garner, an Assistant Principal at Cleveland High School.
“I feel like a bunch of the teachers have really poured into me over these four years and some teachers have like moved around and like taught different subjects but there’s been one teacher in particular that’s really poured into me and she’s motivated me and held me accountable all four years and it’s been a really great experience,” said Katriel Sentell, a student at Cleveland High School.
“If we believe in the youth if we believe in their generation, they’re gonna believe in themselves and that’s what we’re doing here at Cleveland high school”,” said Pritchard.
