What’s Right With Our Schools: Regional Envirothon Competition
HIXSON, TN (WDEF) – Students from across the area recently came together at Chester Frost Park to compete in the Regional Envirothon competition. It was a way for the kids to learn about our environment in a hands-on and competitive setting.
Chester Frost Park in Hixson came alive with excitement as the Southeast Tennessee Resource Conservation and Development Council hosted its annual Regional Envirothon Competition.
Students from across the region gathered to put their environmental knowledge to the test.
One student said, “It will help you in the long run for sure it teaches you more about the planet, so you’ll know more. It’s pretty helpful and fun to do.”
The competition tested students in five key areas: aquatics, wildlife, soils, forestry, and a current environmental issue. With hands-on stations set up throughout the park, students faced challenges that pushed them to apply
Renita Beaty is an Urban Conservationist with the Hamilton Co Soil Conservation District.
She says, “Again the regional contest today so the winner today will go on to the state competition the national contest this year is going to be going to Canada. So, if they move that far they will get to see another part of the country potentially that they don’t get to see.”
One of the coaches shared thatcompetitions like this changed his life, and now he’s eager to see other students have the same opportunity to grow and learn, just like he did.
Joshua Felker says, “This contest was a huge part in my life this was the first non-athletic contest I ever did in my life, and it completely changed my life. I went on to get a degree in wildlife because of this contest this is the catalyst that yielded my entire pathway.”
As the competition wrapped up, the students left with more than just medals, they left with a deeper understanding of environmental science and a renewed passion for protecting the planet.
