What’s Right With Our Schools: Richard Hardy Memorial Hosts Scopes Trial

SOUTH PITTSBURG, TN (WDEF) – The Scopes Trial is a vital part of local history that is still being discussed nearly a hundred years later. Students at Richard Hardy Memorial School got a unique look at the age-old argument. We recently headed to South Pittsburg for a thought-provoking example of what’s right with our schools.

Lynne Haas teaches Math at Richard Hardy.

She says, “When I found out last summer, that they had this shortened version, of an hour, to be able to present to schools and they were making it open. I think it would be wonderful for the students over here to learn about some of the important history of the area.”

Haas continues, “It’s one of those battles that’s still being fought today, because I remember when I was in school, it was the theory of evolution, and then it’s then it sort of switched to being taught as if it was proven, which we were still waiting for that missing link. Then, of course, you still have the religion versus science. There’s still those discussions going on. Any time that you can have people were oh this is part of history. It’s part of our in general area history. What can we learn from it? And I think that everybody who attended today is going to go away with a little bit more grounding and knowledge.”

Freshman Ethan DeVore says, “I liked that it was like a reenactment of it and everything, then it like it like put movements to words you know. Instead of just reading something off of a website explaining it, you know and just being like, ‘Oh yeah this guy said. This and that guy said that.’ You know it like kind of put movement to it.”

Freshman Kierra Buchanan chips in,” This gives me a better understanding of how this, how it affects us today, and you know just an appreciation for history.”

Haas concludes, “They each presented their viewpoint, and where did they wind up? Still having those conversations. Still having some disagreements. But can we disagree without being too disagreeable.”

We asked, ” And that’s the message?”

Haas answered, “Yes, I think so.”
