What’s Right With Our Schools: Rossville Middle School Reach Scholarship

ROSSVILLE, Ga. (WDEF) – Imagine earning college scholarship money in the 8th grade! Some very smart students are doing just that in Georgia. That kind of forward thinking is a far-reaching example of what’s right with our schools.

Glen Brown is the Director of Student Services for Walker County Schools.

He explains,” There’s multiple criteria involved. Academic being a core feature, academic economic need also being another feature to that. And then, of course, the selection process, what the students do with their civic life, how invested they are, teacher recommendations in an interview process as well.”

Heather Curtis is a mom.

She says, “I think it’s amazing. I really hope she actually, you know, takes it all the way and uses it and actually goes to college.”

Her daughter, scholarship recipient Caeleigh says, “I want to do. I think it’s Savannah’s art school for design or something. It’s about like, you know, just doing art. You can do interior design, fashion, and just all things just surrounding art, like photography, which is something I’m really into. So, it’s just things that I can do in the future that’ll be something that can move me.”

Dr. Robert Stinson is the Principal Middle School.

He says, “I love when good things happen to kids, but I love when good things happen to really great kids. There’s not a student in this building that she doesn’t consider a friend and that she won’t go out of her way to help. And if someone’s down, she’s got a soft word for. You’ve seen her smile. It’s infectious. That’s the first thing you notice about her.”

Tony Curtis is Caeleigh’s dad.

He says, “I hope she’s happy. No matter what she does, as long she’s happy. She’s amazing. She’s really sweet, kind. She’s not always that way with daddy, but that’s okay.”

Florence Currie is a 6th teacher at Rossville Middle.

She says, “She is so upbeat and positive, and she has the most beautiful spirit and she’s very. I don’t know, she’s got a wave about her that just connects with other people. She’s wonderful.”

Glen Brown adds, “Ladies and gentlemen welcome to our 2023 Rossville Middle SCHOOL REACH presentation. This is our second REACH scholarship winner from Rossville Middle School. The state-wide program in every school, has an opportunity to go through a selection process, by evaluating the academics, the civic investments, the interview process, and having a committee select our winner. And Caeleigh congratulations on this wonderful honor and opportunity for you.”

Caeleigh Curtis concludes, “I want to thank all of you for coming. It means a lot to me. And just… my three years being at this school has changed me as a person. It has made me who I am. I feel like I have changed so much over the three years, that I don’t even recognize who I was before. And I honestly feel more comfortable in myself than I ever did before. Which makes me actually really excited. And I’m just really glad I got the opportunity to become an applicant. Even if I didn’t get the scholarship. So, just thank you.”
