What’s Right With Our Schools: Tyner Academy Commitment Day

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Reaching a goal often starts with visualization. Freshmen at Tyner Academy got to look three years into their futures at a recent commitment to graduation ceremony. It included caps and gowns and inspirational speeches. All that adds up to a far-reaching example of what’s right with our schools.

Rashaad Williams in the Principal at Tyner Academy.

He says, “Today’s commitment to Graduate Ceremony is um designed for our students to think about the end in mind. Um we want to inspire them to complete their years of high school so that they can be celebrated in the end with their um diploma. So, we make them see what that feels like, what does that celebration feel like. Um so they can keep them focused um the next 4 years that they here with us.”

Catarina Domingo is a freshman at Tyner.

She says, “I feel like we’re going to be the last piece of History that’s going to be left on this land. And when the new classes come, we will or they will create a new history that will go on and on and on until we come old. And come back here and revisit our you know old history, say I was there once, before this new school was created.”

Principal Williams adds, “It’s about to happen any day. We look forward to it, been in meetings for every other week talking about the progress of the building. Um, having start my career here as a teacher, I’m looking forward to being now the one the principle that I get to lead this school into the new building.”

He continues, “Full circle, full circle. This building has served a great purpose, it’s full of tradition and history. The good thing about it though a lot of the tradition we get to take still over to the new building. So, the time of Pride will still be strong in our new building. But just in more contemporary accommodations. And we are looking forward to all the great things that we can do over in that building um, to enhance the programs that we have going on here at Tyner.

Brandon Lyons is a freshman at Tyner.

He says,” It has a lot of tradition you know. All, a lot of, historic things have happened here, you know with championships state championships all that. And it’s very special for us to be the last class to ever be in this building to graduate for like ninth grade to commitment day.”

Freshman Makenzie Billups adds, ” I’m honored like, because like we’re just going to be the last place to actually be in this school that has a lot of history in it. And that’s, that’s an important thing. And you should be proud of it.”

Principal Willimas concludes, “We just want to thank our community for their continued support. We want to thank our parents for coming out today, and their continued support of our programs. We want to thank mayor Wamp and Karista Mosley Jones with our school board who came and demonstrated their support. As well as Dr Marqiis Stewart who’s our community suit um representing Dr Robertson, and Dr Stewart, um come and support what we’re doing here at Tyner. It takes a village and we’re very appreciative of everyone taking their time to come and support our scholars today.”
