What’s Right With Our Schools: Wilderwood Summer Camp

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Looking for a way to keep your kids active, engaged and off devices this Summer? One Chattanooga Camp is offering loads of adventures in the great outdoors. We visited Wilderwood Summer Camp, where every week brings a new theme and a new opportunity to explore.

While sitting in a tire swing, Camper Payton Miller told us, “Everyone is so kind and the activities are super fun, especially for bouncing jump week, because you get to bounce on bouncy houses of course and yeah, it’s a great environment to be in.”

Camp Director Christopher Stewart explains, “Specialized is getting outside, staying outside, playing outside. So, we tell people we’re 90 to 80% outdoor camp. Just about the only things we do inside is shelter from thunderstorms and eat lunch. The rest of the time we’re outside, even if it’s raining, we’re making fun with the mud. That’s kind of been our model, and that’s what parents love about us. The people who come here after year, they’re coming because of that relationship that they’ve built with the staff, that connection that they built with other campers, and then because we’re an unplugged off-line just raw camp.”

A young camper named Liam told us, ” I have never gone camping. I’m really curious what we’re going to do. I really hope it’s like camping somewhere in the actual woods over there, and there’s also a slide and zip line.

Sight leader Kyler Jones concludes, “Kids don’t get off their screen very often, and to see these kids have to interact with nature and make teepees and forts and play with sticks, and you don’t see that very often.  So, I love the fact that I get to be a part of getting kids connected back to nature.”
