Whitfield County GOP censures representative

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) – The Whitfield County Republican Party says they are censuring one of their state representatives.

They are upset with Representative Kasey Carpenter over what they say are a series of votes that do not align with their party’s platform.

Most recently, they opposed Representative Carpenter’s vote on a bill that would ban sanctuary cities after an illegal immigrant was charged with the murder of Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus, being the only Republican to vote against the bill joining Democrats.

The Whitfield County GOP says they will no longer support Representative Carpenter, who is running unopposed in the upcoming May primary.

However, they believe this censure sends a clear message despite concerns over intra-party fighting.

Whitfield County Republican Party Chairman Eddie Caldwell said, “It is a concern, but it’s always been that way, that there’s the conservatives who are fighting for the thing and we have these RINOs who cause a lot of trouble within the party, so that’s why we are trying to get rid of him.”

We reached out to Representative Carpenter and have not heard back.

He however has posted on his campaign’s Facebook that he has had disagreements with the party but hopes they can stand together.
