Why Did Volkswagen Do It? We Now Have A Theory

Chattanooga (WDEF) As the Volkswagen scandal grows, the recurring question has been why did they do it?

Why lie, why cheat, why risk their brand’s reputation?

We’re now getting some answers leaking out of Germany.

Two top engineers are under scrutiny.

They came up with the new clean diesel engine the company was counting on to meet the newer, tougher air pollution standards, specifically the California test.

But they apparently failed.

The engine wasn’t clean enough (including the diesel that would have been installed in Cross Blue SUV’s here in Chattanooga).

This revelation would have been devastating to the company’s rep.

After all, they chose clean diesel over electric vehicles based on their "German engineering."

So someone decided it was less embarrassing to cheat, than fess up.

Now the question is who made THAT call.
