CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A Chattanooga woman and her dog escaped their home as a grease fire rapidly spread.

Chattanooga firefighters responded to a call of a house fire just after 2 p.m. on Thursday. A neighbor called 911 after seeing the fire in the 5100 block of Lantana Lane. The home is in the Ware Heights subdivision near Highway 58.

Firefighters could see the smoke from Highway 58 as well. Once they arrived, crews could see heavy fire and smoke coming from the front and side of the home.

The Chattanooga Fire Department said the woman was home cooking at the time when a grease fire quickly spread. The woman said she grabbed her dog and got out without any injuries.

Firefighters said the garage and kitchen were fully involved. Flames were also coming through the roof when firefighters started the attack.

In addition, they said a car inside the garage caught fire as well. Gasoline from the car was adding to the flames, according to CFD.

Chattanooga firefighters said they had the flames under control in 10 to 15 minutes. They said this prevented the fire from destroying the rest of the building.

The American Red Cross will now be helping the displaced resident.
