CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – A resident was taken to the hospital after an apartment fire Friday morning on Standifer Gap Road.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the Elements of Chattanooga Apartments around 7:45 a.m.

When firefighters got there, they found heavy smoke coming from the building.

Once they found the apartment, they quickly got the fire out.

They saved two dogs in the apartment but the woman living there was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire started when she was cooking and then fell asleep.

Their advice: “Our Fire Prevention Bureau urges residents to watch what they are heating and never leave cooking unattended. Set a timer as a reminder. If you leave the kitchen, turn the burner off. ”
