CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-Wreaths Across Chattanooga is taking time during the Holidays to remember the Fallen five at the Wreath of Honor.
“Each year before we place the wreaths at Chattanooga National Cemetery, we place these five wreaths so that we never forget the Fallen five, four US, marine to us, navy, sailor that died well before their time of passing,” said Captain Mickey McCamish.
Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan, Sergeant Carson Holmquist, Lance Corporal Squire Skip Wells, Staff Sergeant David Wyatt, & Navy Petty Officer Second Class Randall Smith all passed away in 2015 from a terrorist attack.
On Tuesday, Captain McCamish says the wreaths are set aside to honor the courageous men.
“It signifies a unity that existed back almost 10 years ago, and it is important that we remember that. And I might add that the foundation that we are standing on also reflects how Chattanooga was felt that day, the firmness that was felt in our community,” said McCamish.
For more than 11 years, Thousands of Flower wreaths have been placed on graves to pay homage to local veterans.
McCamish considers it a privilege to recognize those that served our country.
“We are the most patriotic city in America, and this is one way that we can show that,” said McCamish. “We can show it here by placing the five reefs here. We can also show it to the fact that we are placing 49,000 wreaths on the graves of veterans at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.”
And McCamish encourages folks during this Holiday season, remember the sacrifice of freedom from our Veterans.
“In the military, you put your life on the line just like first responders first. You say goodbye in the morning, but you may not return that evening, And it’s important that we remember that,” McCamish concluded.
Wreaths across Chattanooga will place the wreaths on Saturday starting at 8am.
