Wreaths Across Chattanooga opening celebration held in Hixson
HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) — Wreaths Across Chattanooga recognizes fallen service members.
An opening celebration was held at the Hixson Walmart for the local veteran effort.
Mayor Tim Kelly delivered remarks at the ceremony of the opening celebration of Wreaths Across Chattanooga.
A Presentation of Colors was made by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 203 color guard.
Last year, Chattanooga was named the number-one wreath fundraising group in the nation.
Over 30,000 wreaths were placed by 2,500 volunteers in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
“Chattanooga has long been known as one of the most patriotic cities in America. We have an act every year we put a wreath on every grave at the National Cemetery. That’s almost 50,000 and we haven’t quite gotten there. But partnering with Chairman Eversole who used to be with Walmart, we got the cost down to $10 a wreath. So that’s the effort,” Mayor Kelly said.
This ceremony was to honor the contributions that have been made thus far– while inspiring others to get involved.
