Younger generations transition away from the standard workplace

Traditional working culture is being challenged as more people discover the road to success does not have to lead through a desk job.

Former professor and small business owner John McCabe says he preached to his students their options, but didn’t realize the extent of them until he took the jump out of the corporate world himself.

“You don’t have to take a corporate job, you don’t have to work in a cubicle,” says McCabe.  ‘You have the technology and the understanding to go out and build your own hustle, side hustle or your main hustle, anywhere in the world.”

Here in the Gig City, companies like Society of Work and the Enterprise Center are providing people with the space to co-work, giving them the flexibility to work for others while making it on their own time.

Community Manager Matt Intemann says, “if you’re building a business or even if you’re just working remote for a company you need amenities and you need community to be able to work at your best, and so by providing a physical space people can come and work at they can be more productive.”

Intemann says that he belives one of the biggest keys to productive work is eliminating the idea of the rigid work schedule.

“I think not having an arbitrary work day, like you have to come in at 8:30 and you have to stay till 5… its, you work until your work is done. And setting your own hours and having a flexible schedule with some of these distributed work forces, I think its the way to go.”

And while it may sound crazy to some, it’s an idea that’s already widely accepted in the millennial generation.

“Companies are still learning about how to deal with this, the schools are still learning about it, but to the talent that’s graduating now its like no brainier,” says McCabe.

And as the younger generations make their way out of the education world and into the work world, the trend of people working for themselves is expected to grow.
