Driver who ran over woman during Walmart purse snatching takes plea deal

COVINGTON, Georgia (WDEF) The suspect accused of running over a woman in a Walmart Parking lot last year entered a guilty plea on Wednesday.

Brandon Shawn Smith entered the plea in the Newton County Judicial Court in Georgia.

Prosecutors say that last November, Smith tried to grab the purse of a Covington woman in the parking lot.

The woman fought back and was then dragged away from her ca.

Police say Smith then jumped into his car and backed over her.

He then ran over her two more times, killing her.

In the plea deal, Smith will get two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years.

Stephanie Maria Rodriguez was also charged in the case.

The court has ordered her to undergo mental evaluation before she stands trial.

The pair are suspected of a series of violent purse snatchings across the Southeast.

They were eventually captured in Manchester, Tennessee after the Covington attack.
