Murphy North Carolina man sent to jail for violating sex offender registry rules

MURPHY, North Carolina (WDEF) – A judge has sentenced a Cherokee County man to 80 months in jail for violation of the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.

Cherokee County sheriff investigators found that Ricky Leroy Leistra Jr. was not living at the home where he was registered and he failed to re-verify.

He was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child in 1999.

Leistra had two previous registry failures on his record.

He was sentenced under the habitual felon guidelines.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We are grateful for the excellent team work on this case. All the agencies involved, Andrews Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and our Deputies and Investigators work tirelessly in concert to ensure compliance with the registry laws. The safety of our citizens is of paramount importance especially our young ones.”
