2015 Soap Box Derby

ATHENS, TN (WDEF) – The Athens Parks and Recreation Department will be running the 21st Annual Athens Tennessee Soap Box Derby on Saturday, May 30th on Keith Lane. Driver introductions will begin at 8 am and racing will continue throughout the day.

There will be three divisions in the Athens race, the Stock Car Division which will have 14 cars racing, the Athens Federal Community Bank Super Stock Division which will race 15 cars and the Super Kids Division supporting 3 drivers. The Stock Division driver’s race in a smaller car where the car and driver together weigh 200 pounds and in the Super Stock Division the car is a little larger and the car and driver together weigh 240 pounds. The Super Kids Division is for special needs children who are driven down the track by former Soap Box Derby drivers in a specially designed double seat car. All races are open to boys and girls ages seven to eighteen. 

The Athens race is a preliminary to the world championships and the winners of the Athens Race will receive a birth at the 78th running of the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on July 25th.
