3 suspects arrested in McMinn County for armed robbery
One of the people arrested is suspected in several other Dollar General holdups in Athens.
According to Sheriff Joe Guy, he and his deputies were on patrol when the robbery occurred about 1140am. Sgt Danny Jones responded to the store as Sheriff Guy and other Sheriffs deputies and Athens Police officers began covering possible escape routes.
"We were all right where we needed to be," said Sheriff Guy. "the suspects had changed clothes and one was hiding in the vehicle when it was first spotted. But the credit goes to Athens Officer Kevin Graves for his observations that confirmed the suspect vehicle."
Sheriff Guy said that Athens officers remained in contact with the suspects and stopped there vehicle at the Hardees on South White St as he and his Deputies closed in. Inside the vehicle was Sontonique McClain, 21, of Augusta Ga who Athens PD Detective Josh Rhodes had identified days earlier as the suspect in other Dollar General holdups in Athens City. Also taken into custody was Laporshece McClain of Dayton, and Julius Edwards of Athens.
"It was a great example of two agencies working together," added Sheriff Guy.
Sheriff Guy said that cash and a handgun, along with other important pieces of evidence from the and Athens robberies, were located in the suspect vehicle and at the suspects residence.
The suspects and charges were as follows: Sontonique McClain was charged with Aggravated Robbery and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon; Laporshece McClain and Julius Edwards were both charged with Criminal Responsibility for Aggravated Robbery.
All three were booked into the McMinn Co Justice Ctr and will face court arraignment next week.
