50 Hamilton County employees to be relocated to Gateway building

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-  The future Gateway School will be the temporary home of 50 county employees.

Those employees have been working in the MLK Building on Oak Street.

The Commission approved a resolution to allow them to work at the Gateway Building on 6th Street while repairs are made to the MLK Building, which currently has insufficient air conditioning.

While this temporary relocation is intended to only last a year, there has not been a set start for the renovation project to the MLK Building, leaving some concerned that this could delay the Gateway’s use as a future school.

“If we don’t even know when we’re going to send a project out to bid, or the scope of the project, I’m concerned, I’m not sure how we can commit to 12 months. That’s fine, I can just vote no, and you guys can pass it if you want, but to me it seems that this move is not as well thought out as it should be,’ said Commissioner David Sharpe.

County administrators say that Hamilton County Superintendent Dr. Justin Robertson is being consulted as they work to get the Gateway Building ready to become a school.
