80 New Jobs Coming to Whitfield County

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF)- Whitfield County has received some very positive economic news.

A food manufacturer, Essentia Protein Solutions, is building a new $100 million plant at the Carbondale Business Park just south of Dalton.

According to Jevin Jensen, Whitfield County Comission Chair, they will be producing a variety of products including, “chicken broth which goes to all of the major soup providers. They also make protein powders that goes into some of the nutrient drinks. All kinds of natural food products, even enhanced beef jerky.”

Jensen is also excited about how this will help continue to diversify the economy of Dalton, as, “If you think about a soup manufacturing company, that’s a recession proof business. We have been through the housing downturns, because we have so many flooring manufacturers here, so we want to continue to diversify our economy, and these 80 new jobs will really help that and give us a bit of protection from recessions because there’s nothing better and cheap to eat than soup, and we’re excited to have them.”

This plant will help out the tax revenue of Whitfield County significantly, and will not cost taxpayers much in investments to get the benefits. Jensen said on what Essentia will pay is that, “We charge for the land now, so we are excited to have about a 780,000 dollar investment back to the taxpayers from Essentia property in the industrial park.”

The Carbondale Industrial Park has been no stranger to headlines this year. In May, an expansion to the Q-Cells Solar Plant means that the Dalton economy has gotten two huge investments in just the past six months.

Jensen expects groundbreaking to begin by the end of the year, and for the plant to be ready by the end of next year. 80 new jobs will be created when the plant opens, and they will be salaried positions above the area’s median income.
