News 12 Then: Presidential Visits to Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – For decades, Chattanooga never got a visit from a President while he was in office.

But in the last 30 years, we have been visited by every sitting President except Bill Clinton.

Here is a look back at each of those visits, including an historic note about Franklin Roosevelt’s dedication of Chickamauga Dam in 1940.

7/30/2013 President Barack Obama came to talk jobs at the Chattanooga Amazon plant.

2/22/2007 President George W. Bush came to talk about Healthcare at Erlanger and the Trade Center. He made an unscheduled stop for lunch at Porker’s restaurant downtown.

9/29/1992 President George H. Bush came to town for a stump speech at the airport for his second term (He had visited a Shaw Plant in Dalton just a couple of months before)

5/19/1987 President Ronald Reagan visited McKenzie Arena to address a group of graduating high school students about education.

9/2/1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to Chattanooga to dedicate the newly construction Chickamauga Dam.
