Whitwell Edges South Pitt 34-28 in Double Overtime
Whitwell, TN-(WDEF-TV) Whitwell rallied to beat rival South Pittsburg 34-28 in double overtime on Friday night in the state playoff quarterfinals. The Pirates took an early 14-0 lead in the first half. Whitwell got a touchdown from Trenton Stockwell as time expired in the first half to make it 14-8 at the break. Garrett Raulston scored for South Pittsburg with roughly five minutes to play to make it 20-8 Pirates. Tigers answered with a Tanner Stewart touchdown reception on their next series to make it 20-14. Whitwell got the ball back and scored in the final minute on another Tanner Stewart touchdown reception to tie the game. Two-point try was no good so we went to overtime. Hudson Petty scored on a short TD run in overtime. Two point try made it 28-20 Tigers. Garrett Raulston answered for South Pitt. Two point conversion tied the game game at 28. Whitwell then held the Pirates on their first possession of double overtime. Whitwell then got a 10-yard TD run from Hudson Petty to win it 34-28 in double OT. The Tigers will now host Greenback in the state semifinals.
