Georgia Prepares For First Sugar Bowl in Ten Years
Georgia is returning to the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 2008 as they take on Texas. Even though New Orleans was not the Dawgs preferred post-season destination, they promise to make the most of the opportunity.
Georgia just missed out on going to the four team playoff, but head coach Kirby Smart is not concerned at the moment of expanding the playoffs to eight teams.
Said Smart:”I’ve seen all the debates across the country. It’s not a big thing for me right now. Obviously you want to be in the four. It makes the season very meaningful. The biggest thing for us is we know if you win the SEC, you’ve certainly got opportunities to go out and do things. that’s the ultimate goal.”
While it’s disappointing to miss the playoffs, the Sugar Bowl is not a bad alternative.
Said quaterback Jake Fromm:”You know if you go around the team and ask anybody hey, is this where you wanted to be. No it’s not, but we are excited to be here. It’s the Sugar Bowl. It’s a really big bowl.”
Said Smart:”And these bowls give a ton of kids an opportunity to go somewhere they have never gone. To go to a children’s hospital and impact some kids life.”
Said defensive back Eric Stokes:”I’ve never been to New Orleans. The closest I was when we went to Baton Rouge. Other than that, I’ve never been.”
As far as bowl practice goes, it won’t be 24/7 on the Longhorns.
Said Smart:”A lot of people think you are going to go out there and practice for texas 15 times. we are practicing on Georgia for like six or seven. And we are practicing on texas for six or seven. You can’t just do Texas. Guys will be like tired of it.”
Smart will be even busier during the bowl workouts.
With the departure of defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, Smart will be coaching the secondary and helping call the defensive plays against Texas.
Said Smart:”We build a call sheet that Mel uses as a team. He pulled from that in a game. We make adjustments together during the game. Not just one person does.”
