Residents say they want open spaces, new retail at Northgate redevelopment

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-  Hixson residents had another opportunity to voice what they want to see in the redevelopment of Northgate Mall.

This was during Wednesday morning’s Friends of Hixson meeting.

Owner CBL Properties plans to demolish most of the interior of the current mall structure to redevelop as a town center.

The Belk, Old Navy, Ulta, BJ’s, Culver’s, and former JC Penny’s stores would remain standing.

This will follow the replacement of the mall’s aging sewer system, which is being funded through a tax increment financing deal through the city of Chattanooga.

Developers say that the main requests of residents include increased retail and entertainment options, park spaces, and easier access to these businesses.

I believe this will add a tremendous value to Hixson and have a new mixed use town center. A place where people can gather. A place where people can walk. A place where people can eat. I think that the residents of Hixson and then the residents of Chattanooga will be excited about what happens.”

Meshel says that he expects this work to begin at Northgate in 2028.

There will be another listening session for residents sometime next month.
