Fire at Evergreen Apartments

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A fire damages unit at the Evergreen Apartments on Hickory Valley Road Tuesday evening.

It happened in the H Building in the Apartments near I 75.

Robert Knowles was coming home to the building when he encountered a woman fleeing with two babies in her arms.

He found the fire in the back of her apartment and used five portable extinguishers to battle it.

But he couldn’t contain the blaze.

When firefighters arrived, it had gotten into the roofing.

All of the residents were evacuated safely.

Fire teams spared most of the units, but two or three on the first floor will have water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
