Hamilton County Schools close Thursday for the weather

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Hamilton County schools are closing on Thursday because of weather.

School officials say the rain, followed by freezing conditions after 2 AM in the higher elevations.

Chief Meteorologist Patrick Core says it won’t get above freezing on the mountains until around noon.

Here is how it affects other school activities.

— Athletic events will be rescheduled and practices cancelled.

— Childcare will be open from 8 AM to 6 PM at Battle Academy, East Ridge Elementary, Red Bank Elementary, Harrison Elementary, Middle Valley Elementary, Wolftever Creek Elementary and East Brainerd Elementary.

— 12 month employees report as scheduled.

The weather is the reason, but the schools will also take the opportunity to clean and sanitize for the flu.

School officials say attendance number have been strong so far, but “this will be a good opportunity to take extra precaution during the flu season.”

Marion County has closed school for Thursday & Friday due to illnesses, not the weather.
