Knoxville/ UT moving ahead with pedestrian bridge plan

KNOXVILLE (WDEF) – The City of Knoxville is moving ahead with plans to build what Chattanooga has had for decades, a pedestrian bridge over the Tennessee River.

This week, the University will ask for the funds to buy land on the south side of the River, across from Thompson Bolling Arena.

The plan is to build parking for the arena and then connect it with the bridge.

The span would be the center of a major redevelopment of the Knoxville Waterfront.

The bridge would allow both walking and biking traffic.

It would also open the opposite bank for expansion of the UT campus and housing areas.

The city, county and university are all taking part in the project to develop the South Knoxville Waterfront.
