FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WDEF) — Hazardous materials were spilled in two separate areas of Fort Payne, Alabama on Monday. Firefighters shut down roads as a result and ask the public to take alternate routes.

The first spill happened on Glenn Boulevard Southwest, near the Mapco gas station by I-59, fire officials said.

Fort Payne Police Department shared a photo, which shows an object lying on the roadway behind a FedEx truck.

The spill happened around 12:40 p.m., central time. City officials said they expected crews to be cleaning and on-scene for several hours.

Authorities shut down parts of Alabama Highway 35 and the I-59 southbound exit 218. This caused traffic to be very congested, according to fire officials.

The second spill happened on 35th Street Northeast at Gault Avenue.

Police said crews then closed the road and the railroad crossing.

Fort Payne officials are asking the public to seek alternate routes for both incidents.
